What is NLP?

NLP stands for “neuro-linguistic programming”. As the name suggests, the “neuro” part is concerned with the neural pathways in our brain. The “linguistic” part is the use of language and the “programming” part is to assist people to make changes to the patterns stored in their minds.

NLP utilises a range of techniques. It was developed by modeling the excellence of a number of highly successful therapists. NLP draws on influences from William James (pragmatics), Alfred Korzybski (general semantics), Carl Rogers (‘person-centred therapy’), Eric Berne (transactional analysis), Karl Pribram, George Miller and Eugene Gallanter (the TOTE model), Fritz Perls (Gestalt therapy), Virginia Satir (family therapy) and Milton Erickson (hypnosis), among others. How does NLP work?

NLP is a highly effective system which uses language and communication to access a person’s unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is where all of our patterns and habits are stored. NLP works with a person’s values, beliefs, attitudes, strategies, emotions and decisions to help effect change very quickly. All of our actions are determined by what we value, what we believe about ourselves and the world, the attitudes we hold, our strategies in various areas of life, past emotional events and the decisions we make. By dealing with these aspects of our mind, NLP helps effect change much more quickly than techniques which involve only a person’s conscious mind.

Because NLP is based on effective communication, it can be applied in many settings. Some of the most common applications are: training and education, counselling, management, life coaching or any other situation in which someone wants to make changes in their life.

NLP is entirely safe because no-one can be forced to make changes that they are not ready for. NLP uses a series of techniques to simply guide a person to make the changes they wish to make. All work is done internally by the participant. They are always in control of any changes that are made.

Why choose NLP?

Compared to other forms of counselling, NLP saves time, money and effort. Many people require only one session to make the changes they want (this varies between individuals, depending on the issue).
