Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice which dates back over 3,000 years. It was developed in India. The word yoga means ‘to join or unite’, and the aim of yoga has traditionally been to join ourselves as an individual with the universal; that which is greater than ourselves. In the West, yoga often focuses more on physical postures than on spiritual practice. However, the spiritual influences of yoga are maintained through the effect that it has on calming and centering the mind. What style of yoga? Yoga classes are in Hatha yoga style. Hatha yoga consists of asana (postures), pranayama (breathing) and meditation. Postures are held for a period of time to allow the body to stretch and develop strength, and to work on the subtle energy body. Hatha yoga uses the same postures as Iyengar and Ashtanga yoga, but the emphasis in teaching differs (Ashtanga yoga uses more flowing sequences, while Iyengar yoga is very focused on alignment and uses a variety of props). Hatha yoga is suitable for all body types and all ages, as all postures are always modified to suit the level of the student.
Benefits of yoga A common perception about yoga is that it’s just stretching. But yoga is much more than that! Some of the benefits include: With regular practice, your body will become more efficient in its movement, using less effort for the same amount of work.
Flexibility work is also very complementary to weight training or other strength work. Yoga poses always offer a range of options (from basic to stronger). You simply choose the option most suitable for you.
